Thumbnail configuration is not something which can be done with standard Windows tools. If you want a certain type of file to look differently in Windows Explorer, you will find limited options or none at all. MysticThumbs lets you generate thumbnails for most image formats, even those which are not supported by Windows. It features many customization options and they are all found one one, simple interface.

You will need to have Ghostscript installed on your computer if you want to use the application's full potential. There is no need to search for it on the Internet because the setup wizard will download and install it automatically. There are low system requirements to meet and you can run MysticThumbs on Windows XP, Vista or Win 7.

After installing MysticThumbs, you will find new context menu options when right clicking an image file. A small interface can be accessed with one of these options. It contains a series of drop menus, check boxes or simple buttons which can be used to customize thumbnails. You may configure thumbnails which are associated with a specific file format or with all the formats supported by the program.

A format can be selected from a drop menu on the interface and if you want to select all of them, you need to click a check box next to the drop menu. If the thumbnail has any transparency settings, you may choose to ignore it, apply it or change it with a checkerboard with the options found in another drop menu. With the aid of similar options, you can also choose a border type (flat or shadow), adjust the gamma and more.

If you want to place an icon on certain thumbnails, for example, a Photshop icon on .psd files, you can do it from the same interface by ticking the Icon option. You can choose an icon from the software's own library or you can browse for one. When you are done with the customization options, you can click a green check sign in the lower right corner of the interface and thumbnails will be changed according to your settings.

Options for making a thumbnail transparent, scaling it up and others can also be found in the context menu, after right clicking an image. This way, you can apply certain effects to individual thumbnails, without having to navigate through the interface.

Pros

The software's control panel can be brought up immediately with a context menu option. You can change many aspects of your thumbnails and the involved options are easy to use.

Cons

The buttons on the control panel are not labeled. Fortunately, they are described by context sensitive tooltips and there is a help file available as well. MysticThumbs gives you complete control over thumbnails. It lets you customize them fast, without too much effort.
